We also offer budget friendly set schedule shared transfers from most popular destinations. The combination allows them the convenience to schedule private transfers according to their flight itinerary and save money on the other transfers.
It depends on what you are interested in and how far you are willing to travel. No matter where you go, there will be drive times to consider. Arenal is several hours from the closest beach destination, but you will be passing through gorgeous countryside, no matter which direction you go.
The most common destinations to combine with Arenal are the Guanacaste beaches to the west. Tamarindo is a cool little surfside village with swimming and surfing beaches, shops, and nightlife. Flamingo and Conchal are near Tamarindo, providing excellent swimming beaches, but are quieter towns. Playa Hermosa is a beautiful, quiet beach town that is right around the corner from LIR Airport. Further south, Samara and Carrillo are fun little off the beaten path beach towns that offer traditional Costa Rican charm. These beaches range from 3.5 - 4.5 hours from Arenal depending on which one, type of transfer selected and traffic that day.
Many visitors to Arenal that are interested in the jungle, wildlife and beaches choose to combine with Manuel Antonio to the south (4-5 hours) or even the Southern Caribbean (around 5.5 hours). Jaco Beach (around 3 - 3.5 hours) is good for those looking for a Central Pacific beach town with surfing, great sport fishing, and nightlife.
There are several options for those seeking other inland destinations for wildlife or adventure. Monteverde Cloud Forest is only a few hours away and is perfect for highland bird watching, canopy adventures and of course, cloud forest. The Rio Celeste Waterfall is a couple of hours north of Arenal, offering lush rainforest and the most beautiful waterfall in Central America. Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, a lesser-known adventure destination, is located a few hours west of Arenal. Sarapiqui is a nearby region to the east with great birdwatching. Further to the east, Tortuguero is a remote area with loads of exotic wildlife. Of course, you can’t leave the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park off the list. While driving is not recommended, flights are available.
How long should I stay?
Most visitors stay 3 - 5 nights.
Is it safe to visit Arenal?
The last major eruption that harmed people was in the 1960’s, so it is highly unlikely to occur while you visit.
Similar to most other areas of Costa Rica, violent crime is practically non-existent.
When will I find the best prices?
May through November
What is the weather like?
The temperature is more affected by current weather systems than seasons. Most of the time, daytime temperatures hover in the upper 70s and 80s, though if a severe front comes in, temps can dip into the 60s during the day. Night time temperatures are usually around 15 degrees cooler. Arenal is a rainforest area, so expect rain. It can rain at any point in time, so always be prepared. At the same time, the frequent rains keep everything lush, green and beautiful.
Is the volcano active?
Arenal stopped spewing lava in October 2010. However, it is still the country’s top attraction as the hot springs are still hot, and the volcano remains an iconic backdrop for the country’s best adventure activities.
When is the best weather?
February through July, but people visit year-round. Also, keep in mind, the weather is very unpredictable in this area.
Is it touristy?
Some may view Arenal as touristy, but most would not when considering the big picture. There are only a few thousand year-round residents in La Fortuna. With tourists, even in the busiest of seasons, this number only swells to 5-6 thousand people. There are many small hotels and a handful of larger resorts. You'll find shops, restaurants, and plenty of tourist-geared activities. But when compared to popular “touristy” destinations in other areas such as Mexico or the Caribbean, 5-6k people is a drop in the bucket.
