While Costa Rica is not the best location for scuba diving in the world, there are several great dive spots such as Cano Island, Bats Island, Catalina Islands, Cocos Island and various reef locations off the Caribbean coast.
Cano Island is probably the best dive spot off the mainland. The island is located off the Osa Peninsula at a half hour boat ride from Drake Bay. The best time to visit is from December through April as water clarity is at its best during that time. Common sightings include White tipped Sharks, Manta Rays, Sting Rays, Eels, Whales, Dolphins and Sea Turtles.
The Catalina Islands site is probably the most popular dive site in Costa Riva due to its convenient location at only a half hour boat ride from Tamarindo. The best water clarity period is December through July. Common sightings include White tipped Sharks, Manta Rays, Sting Rays and Eels.
Bats Island, located off the Santa Elena Peninsula in Guanacaste is a great dive spot for a variety of marine life, but most visited to see Bull Sharks. The best water clarity period is December through July. Common sightings include Bull Sharks, Manta Rays, Sting Rays, Eels, Sea Turtles and Dolphins.
Cocos Island is a World Heritage site located a few hundred miles off the coast and can only be visited on a 7 – 10 live aboard boat trip. The islands offer spectacular beauty and a plethora of marine life.
The Caribbean coast has coral reef just off the coastline. Punta Uva is always a favorite with dive spots just five minutes off the beach. Gandoca Manzanillo, just south of Punta Uva is another great dive spot. The reefs at both locations are close to the surface and are home to a wide variety of marine life including nurse sharks, black tip sharks, eels, corals, urchins, rays, loads of smaller tropical fish and much more.
