Overview

Uvita invites you to come whale watching! Imagine seeing these mammoth creatures breach and flip their thundering tails! Certain species come to breed every year at Marino Ballena National Park. These waters are also home to several species of dolphin, some migratory and some living here year round.

You will be picked up from Dolphin Tours Office in Uvita and driven to the beach where your boat and captain will be waiting to meet you. Your guide will provide lifejackets and load up the boat with a cooler full of fresh fruit and cold refreshments. Once everyone is on board you’ll head out onto the protected waters of Marino Ballena National Park in search of beautiful marine creatures like Bottle Nosed dolphins, Spotted dolphins, Humpback whales and sometimes Bryde’s whales and Pilot whales.

There are three important landmarks in Marino Ballena National Park that are not only excellent spots for whale and dolphin watching but beautiful sites to see, One is the famous Isla Ballena (Whale’s Tail), a sandbar arising at low tide in the perfect shape of a whale’s tail, as if beckoning the whales to their breeding grounds. You’ll also be looking in areas around Las Rocas Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters Rock), Cavernas Ventanas (Window Caves) as well as the Tombolo of Punta Uvita.

While out and about enjoying the boat ride, you’ll see a variety of local and migratory birds. You’ll likely go by Whale Island, which is an ocean bird sanctuary where birds of all kinds gather for nesting and feeding. Large iguanas and lizards are typically seen wandering around the Island.

Your experienced captain and guide will share a wealth of knowledge about the national park and the marine life within it. As you encounter various forms of wildlife, including possibly giant sea turtles, your guide will help you identify the species and give you in-depth information about their lifestyle. Cold water will always be available and at some point during the tour, you’ll enjoy a refreshing plate of freshly cut chilled fruit.

Whales are migratory creatures and therefore only come to the area during certain times of the year. Humpback whales are typically seen from December to March and again between mid-July to late October. There is no guarantee you will see a whale, but the chances are high especially during the migration months. Dolphins are commonly seen throughout the year and with their happy smiles are sure to delight.

This tour includes park entrance, a chartered boat, bilingual guide, safety gear, bottled water and fruit snack. One way transportation from your hotel down to the Dolphin Tours office can take between 15 and 45 minutes depending on where you are picked up. The time of boat tour typically takes from 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Please wear sun protective clothing, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bring along binoculars and your camera. You won’t want to miss trying to take a selfie with a whale!

Guides spent a lot of time talking and showing us about the rocks and coast. We were hoping to be on the ocean watching for whales. Did not see a dolphin (I know you can't guarantee animal sightings - but was a little disappointed. Followed the same mom and baby whale. We hoping to see more whales and dolphins.

Very nice tour

The boat was to small. It was hard to even stand up because of all the people.

Once again, the main challenge for me was getting into and out of the boat, but the guide and the captain were very helpful and patient. Rough waves for the trip away from the beach, which made it a bit scary. But enjoyable -- and we saw quite a few dolphins and sea birds.
