Overview

Daybreak in the rainforest, misty and dew-filled, with only the sounds of awakening birds, now is the time to go birding! Guests staying at the Pacuare Lodge Hotel are in for a real tweet! The Lodge will make sure you have plenty of coffee before taking you on an approximate 1.5 hour guided birdwatching hike into the raw and pristine rainforest.

The tour begins bright and early from the hotel’s reception area. Coffee will be served and you’ll meet your knowledgeable birding guide. You’ll be lead through gentle stretching and relaxation exercises that are intended to help enhance your sensory alertness before beginning your hike along well-manicured nature trails to seek out the forest’s inhabitants.

Early in the morning is the prime time for bird watching because, upon awakening, the birds become quite active looking for their first meal of the day. As they begin to sing, their songs are more easily heard while the rest of the forest is still quiet, so they are easier to locate.

As you walk down the path, you’ll see moss covered tree trunks, branches spotted with bromeliad plants, and thick hanging vines. Often the leaves of the tropical rainforest appear abnormally large in comparison to the smaller version of the same plant found in plant shops further north.

Your nature guide will take you to the spots where birds, butterflies, and wildlife tend to feed and nest, pointing out any creatures hidden in the trees and helping you with identification. Through the high-powered spotting scope, you will be able to see fine details and take close-up photos with your camera through the lens of the scope. Most commonly seen in this are Montezuma Oropendolas, Sun Bitterns, Black-cheeked Woodpeckers, Red-throated Ant-Tanagers, with a variety of hummingbirds and colorful Toucans.

During your hike, you will likely encounter more than just birds, as other forms of wildlife will be foraging for their breakfast as well. Animals such as the Three-Toed Sloth, Howler Monkeys, Iguanas and lots of interesting insects live in these woods and are often spotted.

When your hike comes to an end, you’ll be invited to enjoy a well-deserved hearty delicious breakfast. You can sit down and relax taking the time to compare notes and check your bird sightings list with others.

This 1.5 hour tour is only available to guests staying at the Pacuare Lodge Hotel, therefore transportation to the Lodge is not necessary. The tour includes a bilingual nature guide and a delicious breakfast. Please wear fully enclosed walking shoes, plus bring along your camera, binoculars, rain jacket, and bug repellent.
