Overview
A leisurely tour of a verdant tropical rainforest awaits guests staying at the Selva Verde Lodge. This guided hike will stimulate your senses as you pass through a designated portion of 570 protected acres along the Sarapiqui River. The natural trails are easy to walk so you can focus on the sight and sounds surrounding you. This tour provides a perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with life in the jungle!
Guest staying at the Lodge will meet their bilingual, naturalist guide at the reception desk before leaving on a low-key hike taking you into the heart of the jungle. Your guide will be pointing out various forms of wildlife thriving within the canopy from forest floor to up in the treetops. The protected reserve enables plants and animals to live in peace and the serenity is apparent as you stroll through this tropical wonderland.
You will be walking among an array of wildlife species such as the Green Basilisk lizard, Poison Dart frogs, interesting insects, and iguanas. Some of the species are rare but flourishing here. The population of mammals living in the jungle at Selva Verde includes Howler and White Faced Capuchin monkeys, River Otters, Collared Peccary, Coati, the 3-Toed Sloth and much more.
This is also home to a multitude of bird species including the endangered Great Green Macaw, the Tiger Heron, Sunbitterns, Tanagers, Motmots, Toucans, and over 20 species of Hummingbirds, to name a few. Your professional guide will help you to locate and identify the exciting wildlife you'll discover here.
Selva Verde is set along the Sarapiqui River in the Caribbean lowlands. This rainforest reserve is devoted to the preservation of indigenous plants and animals including the Almendro tree which is tied to the existence and protection of the Great Green Macaw. The Almendro tree provides food and nesting for this beautiful, rare bird. Currently, there are less than 200 Great Green Macaws reported in Costa Rica.
The reserve is a popular destination for eco-tourists worldwide. It is intentionally designed to allow guests to enjoy a rainforest experience without damage to the environment. The natural walking paths are effortless and there are covered trails with easy access for the exploring tourists visiting in wheelchairs.
This tour includes a professional, bilingual guide and park entrance fee. Coffee, tea, and snacks are available in the lodge at all times during the day. There is no transportation provided as this approximate 2 hour guided nature walk is only available to guests already staying at the Selva Verde Lodge. Please wear enclosed hiking shoes and bring along binoculars, your camera, bottled water, insect repellent and rain gear.

The guides were great, really knowledgeable and so enthusiastic. We took an extra night tour with them and have to say it was one of the highlights of the holiday

Ronald was an excellent tour guide. I was so excited to see 8 blue jean frogs on the nature walk.

Since this was actually just before peak season, my husband and I had the guide all to ourselves.
The guide spent extra time talking to us about the wildlife. Then he went and put out food in the bird feeding area right after so that we could watch the toucans and about 10 other species of birds come in.
