If you’ve always loved Lepidoptera, this 2 hour guided tour is for you. With one of the largest live exhibits in Costa Rica, this hike through a 29,000 square foot butterfly garden will surround you with colorful butterflies. Your knowledgeable naturalist guide will introduce you to many species and give you ample opportunities for taking photographs.
Ten percent of the world’s population of butterflies is found in Costa Rica, around 1,250 species. Preferring temperate climates, these amazing insects thrive in the rain forest environment where they can mate, lay eggs and successfully continue their life cycle. Several hundred species reside in this park.
The average life span of a butterfly is one month but there are some whose four stages of initial development: egg, caterpillar, pupa then adult, take nine months before ever taking flight. Larger ones typically live longer. The Costa Rican Blue Morpho butterfly with its 8 inch wingspan is an especially beautiful specimen and easy to see with its bright blue iridescent wings.
Since butterflies sip nectar from flowers the gardens are ablaze with tropical blooms to provide food for their diet. They also will siphon the juice from pieces of fruit that is found everywhere in abundance. Find out all about the various colorful species of Costa Rican butterflies as you enter the magical world of their natural habitat.
Round trip transportation is included from your lodging in Monteverde and Santa Elena. Be sure to bring a camera and wear comfortable shoes.
