There are several trails at the base of Arenal Volcano that lead to the closest safe observation point, which is the perimeter of the high-risk danger zone. The zone varies in distance to the volcano based on geographical features which make certain areas more prone to danger in the event of a large eruption. The average is between 1 – 2 kilometers, which is much closer than it may sound.
The trails at the base of the volcano include the El Silencio Trail, Los Tucanes Trail, 1968 Trail, Arenal Volcano National Park, the Observatory at Los Lagos. The hot springs at Tabacon are also near the high-risk danger zone.
Though unlikely anytime soon; all hotels in the area have plans in place in the event of a major eruption.
If you would like to see a volcanic crater, we would recommend going to Poas Volcano. This is an active volcano located in the Central Valley. Visitors can observe the crater of the volcano from an observation point. Irazu Volcano is another option, but a little out of the way for most travelers.
Note that hiking up Arenal Volcano is strictly forbidden and illegal.
