After 40 years of constant activity, the lava stopped flowing at Arenal Volcano in October of 2010. The volcano is still considered active and can erupt at any time. There are plenty of signs of life such as hot springs at the base of the volcano and steam which is often observed coming out of the crater.
You can see old lava flows on some of the trails. The 1968 trail is the most popular to see the lava from the infamous 1968 eruption.
The volcano still provides an iconic backdrop for some of the country’s best adventure activities, making it one of the most visited attractions in Costa Rica.
