Located along the beautiful Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Playa Bejuco is an often overlooked beach area. This is the very definition of off the beaten path, rural tourism. There are only a handful of small sodas (restaurants) and a few hotels. The rest of the area is farm land and the small village.
The beach at Playa Bejuco is undoubtedly the main attraction. The brown sand stretches for miles and is backed by shady palm trees. You can often walk the beach for hours without seeing another person, though you may encounter a monkey or two. If you walk to the point, there are rock outcroppings with small tidal pools that are usually loaded with small tropical fish, snails and crabs.
Bejuco will provide visitors not only with a beautiful beach, but also a sense of the real Costa Rica. Most residents of the area are farm hands or fishermen. The community is also investing in itself to bring tourism by participating in the Blue Flag Program. This is a program that designates Costa Rica’s cleanest and most natural beaches.
Most visitors to the Central Pacific coast stay about 30 km north in Jaco or 34 km south in Manuel Antonio. Though nearby, these popular destinations are a world apart from the tranquility of Bejuco. For those seeking a more peaceful environment, there are several hotels in town and nearby Esterillos. To drop a few names, we would recommend Hotel Playa Bejuco, Delfin Beachfront Resort, Encantada Ocean Cottages, and Alma del Pacifico Beach Hotel. Our experienced travel advisors can help choose the best option for you.
Of course, you can always take a day trip to Manuel Antonio or Jaco for a little more action. Tours such as zipline, whitewater rafting, national park wildlife hikes and more can easily be arranged.
Playa Bejuco, unlike the Guanacaste beaches on the Pacific Coast, enjoys the more tropical temps of the Central Pacific. While this may mean more humidity, it also means lots more to be pleasing to the eyes. Temperatures are in the mid 80s most days, and there is more rainfall in this region during the wet season of May through November.
Remember to pack a swimsuit, flip flops, a hat, a beach towel, shorts, t-shirts, rain gear, insect repellent, sun block and aloe vera gel, and hiking shoes or walking shoes if you plan to visit the nearby Manuel Antonio National Park (a truly magical place in its own right).
Fun Fact: Playa Bejuco is an important nesting site for several species of coastal birds.
