The San Gerardo de Dota area is perfect for those looking to spot the famous resplendent quetzal; this bird has unique features with its crested head, vibrant green body, red breast, and long tail feathers. The quetzal can be sighted year round here, with the best odds during the month of May. Aside from the quetzal, there are many other bird species located within the surrounding area. Such species include emerald toucanettes, bell birds, trogons, hummingbirds, tanagers, and woodpeckers to name a few.

Birdwatchers can acquire a map from any of the lodges that mark out all the different hiking trails in the area. Of course, the use of a local guide is highly recommended for safety and to spot the camouflaged birds which can be very difficult to see.

The San Gerardo de Dota area has cooler temperatures during the morning hours but will get warmer as the day goes on. Visitors should expect showers off and on throughout the day.
